Dublin based immersive production studio is making immersive experiences more impressive for audiences and more affordable for creators. On December 12th, Algorithm will launch their patent-pending product, Orbit, at Outernet’s Entertainment District in the heart of London. The free event will premiere at Outernet’s Immersive Christmas Experience on December the 12th. The public can drop in and experience three-dimensional music videos set to Christmas classics by Slade, Shakin’ Stevens, Darlene Love, E17 and other festive favourites on massive 23,000 sq. ft. floor-to-ceiling 16K screens.
Algorithm developed this breakthrough technology to give creators real-time artistic freedom to develop more sophisticated immersive experiences unlike anything audiences have seen before. The result is a mind-bending anamorphic experience that shows characters move across rooms from one screen to another in a way that makes you forget you’re looking at four walls and a ceiling. Described by Forbes as “London’s ballsiest venue”, this “deep screen experience” is the first of its kind. From a commercial perspective, Orbit promises to reduce production hours by 58%, which means new experiences can be created in a fraction of the time and used in multi-purpose venues.

Where Can You See This In Action

Algorithm Managing Director, Nick Linders, said:
“We’re the first to market with this new visual effect. If you’ve had an underwhelming immersive experience before, we aim to blow your mind with what’s now possible using our new system. Imagine a VR experience, but without the goggles or other barriers getting in the way. It’s an experience you can truly enjoy with others.”
To date, many immersive experiences have fallen short of audience expectations. It is no longer enough to project large scale visuals on walls. According to the 2020 Immersive Entertainment Industry Annual Report (page 49), audiences care about emotional impact, storytelling and subject matter just as much as pure entertainment value in order to connect with an immersive piece.
Production Benefits
Orbit gives more freedom to immersive content creators. The production pipeline transforms how producers engage with the medium, opening the doors to an avalanche of new content as the immersive entertainment sector is set to reach €300bn by 2024. “Imagine creating a film that could only be shown in one cinema, it doesn’t make sense.” explained Nick Linders. Algorithm’s new system blows those barriers away with a much shorter technical step, “we’re making it more affordable to repurpose content for multiple locations.”
Main production benefits include:
Real-time creativity: Whether it’s adapting Hollywood films, Disney animations or designing new artistic experiences, Orbit allows real-time rendering within the production stages giving creators the ability to make artistic decisions on the fly, turning what’s in their mind into reality.
Scalability across locations: Since immersive events are created around a physical space, translating experiences to various different locations is costly and time consuming. Orbit allows content to be developed more efficiently, decreasing production time by 58% and bringing immersive experiences within easier financial reach.
Algorithm’s breakthrough product open the doors into ‘meta-physical’ worlds. Real-world spaces can now double as interactive virtual environments – whether it’s a vacant commercial building or a multi-purpose area, these physical properties could be transformed into virtual shops or community hubs that are open around the clock. Nick said, “What you see at Outernet is a ‘plug and play’ space that brands and other enterprises can use without the eye-watering price tag of hiring an in-house metaverse team”.
How Orbit was funded
Orbit was developed using two funds from Animation Ireland and Screen Ireland. The funds exist to promote Ireland’s world class creative sector internationally. Algorithm was granted funding from both the Animation Concept & Creative Innovation Development Fund and Animation Innovation and Immersive Development Fund. The Irish animation sector has continued to grow rapidly over the past decade and Orbit by Algorithm is a clear indication of the evolution of the sector into immersive technologies.
Ronan McCabe, CEO of Animation Ireland, said: “Animation is at the cutting edge of new technology in the XR and Immersive space. The Innovation and Immersive Development Fund is a very important and welcome Screen Ireland initiative for the sector. The breadth and quality of the applications for funding is very encouraging and we look forward to the delivery of the projects over the coming months and to seeing them showcased in 2023."
What’s Next
Although the Outernet Christmas Experience is expected to draw large crowds, it’s a warm-up event for the Entertainment Districts’ major premier with Algorithm called Let’s Dance. This will launch in 2023 and will tour multiple continents.
In addition, Algorithm will also premier Landfall next year, an original feature that explores the most terrifying and devastating storm to ever hit the Atlantic coast of Ireland. Set in 1839, audiences will have the chance to step into the eye of the storm as they experience what was called “Night of the Big Wind”.
The gap between virtual reality and the real world is getting smaller. Algorithm’s new product launch is a leap forward in closing that distance.
